BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – Opening Horizon League play on Saturday evening at Bloomfield Tennis & Fitness, the Oakland University women’s tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over Milwaukee.Â
Returning to their regular home courts after hosting their home opener at the Pine Lake Country Club, the Golden Grizzlies (4-8) faced the Panthers (5-8) in their first conference match of the season. Juniors Edie Hammond and Emilia Jarvinen continued their strong play in doubles, cruising to a 6-2 win on the No. 1 court to improve to 6-1 at the top spot and 8-3 overall. Milwaukee, however, answered with 6-4 victories at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles courts to claim the doubles point.
Oakland swung the momentum back in singles play, quickly picking up two points. Hammond did not drop a single point in a dominant 6-0, 6-0 performance, and senior Tara Montreuil added a 6-1, 7-5 victory. On the No. 1 court, in a rematch of the Horizon League Individual Championship semifinals, Milwaukee’s Van Hout defeated sophomore and reigning Horizon League Singles Champion Martyna Piechowicz, 6-4, 6-3.
The Golden Grizzlies then took control in the middle of the lineup. Freshman Oliwia Klimas secured a 6-3, 6-4 win on the No. 3 court, and Jarvinen battled through a tight first set before pulling away for a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Nisa Bulut forced the only three-set match of the day, but ultimately fell 1-6, 6-4, 3-6.
With the win, Oakland moves to the top of the Horizon League standings. Conference play does not resume league-wide until March 28, when Cleveland State meets Youngstown State, and Northern Kentucky faces IU Indianapolis.
Last season, the Golden Grizzlies finished 4-2 in Horizon League play, opening with four straight wins. This year, they aim to build on that success and capture the program’s first Horizon League championship.
