SAN DIEGO (March 14, 2026) – Starter Nick Lewis pitched into the seventh inning as Washington State evened the series with a 7-2 victory over San Diego State at Tony Gwynn Stadiumm Saturday evening.
Lewis worked 6.2 innings, struck out four and did not allow a run until the seventh inning to earn the win. Max Hartman collected two hits, tripled, stole a base, scored a run and drove in two while Matt Priest came of the bench to deliver a two-run single and RBI-double.
WSU (7-10, 1-1 MWC) built a 7-0 lead with three runs in the third, three more in the fifth and another in the seventh before SDSU (10-9, 1-1 MWC) scored twice in the seventh before Kaden Wickersham worked a scoreless eighth and Scott Rienguette closed things out in the ninth.
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Both starting pitchers traded zeroes in the first two innings before the Cougars struck for three in the third inning. A pair of walks started the inning, Kyler Northrop bunted both runners up a base before Trevor Smith brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to right field for a 1-0 lead. Gavin Roy followed with a two-out two-strike RBI-single into centerfield before Hartman rocketed an RBI-triple into right centerfield for a 3-0 Cougar advantage.
Lewis allowed a pair of baserunners in the fourth but ended the threat with a strikeout.
Northrop opened the fifth with a triple to right-centerfield, Smith drew a walk and Roy was a hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hartman brought a run home with an RBI-groundout before Priest came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit two-run single back up the middle for a 6-0 lead.
WSU pushed lead to 7-0 after Priest pulled a double to left field to score Hartman. SDSU used four hits to score twice in the bottom of the frame but Wickersham stranded two runners with a fly out to right field. In the ninth, SDSU put two runners on before Rienguette ended the game with a pair of flyouts.
