A man was detained and taken into custody Saturday evening after a nearly seven-hour standoff with police at a Hermosa Beach beachfront residence, after officers discovered a deceased person, believed to be the victim of a homicide.

At about 12:30 p.m., Hermosa Beach police officers responded to a welfare check requested by a landlord who had not heard from their tenant for about a week. The resident was described as an elderly individual.

When officers arrived, they observed signs indicating a possible deceased person inside the residence.

The landlord allowed officers to enter the home, where they encountered another person inside.

According to Sgt. Keaton Dadigan of the Hermosa Police Department, the person told officers he was armed and quickly barricaded himself inside the residence. SWAT units from Hawthorne, Manhattan Beach, El Segundo and Hermosa Beach responded to assist.

After about seven hours of negotiations, at approximately 7:47 p.m., officers took the man into custody and detained him, Dadigan said.

Police said charges are pending and will depend on the circumstances and the outcome of the investigation.

Officers confirmed that one person was found dead inside the home and that the death is believed to be a homicide.

It is unclear if either the deceased person or the person detained are residents of the home or if the person detained is suspected in the death. The relationship between the deceased person and the person detained was also unclear.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau will take over the investigation.

The victim has yet to be identified and circumstances leading up to the death have yet to be released.
