Gary G. Gould

OBITUARY

Gary Gartzmann Gould, a proud fifth-generation native of San Diego, passed away on January 18, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on March 6, 1941, to the parents Elwyn Gartzmann Gould and Mary Margaret Quinlan Gould. He was predeceased by his elder sister, Mary Ann “DeDe” Workman, and leaves behind his younger sister, Ellen Woodside. Gary lived a life deeply rooted in the Point Loma area he loved, carrying forward a family legacy of service, leadership, and dedication.

Gary attended Point Loma High School before continuing his education at California Western University. He proudly served his country for eight years in the United States Coast Guard, an experience that reflected his lifelong commitment to discipline, integrity, and maritime tradition.

Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Gary carried on the family business, Gould Hardware and Machinery Co., established in the 1920s. Under his stewardship, the company remained a respected fixture in the community, symbolizing decades of trust and hard work. In 1988, Gary began a new chapter as a real estate broker in the Point Loma area, where his deep local knowledge and reputation for fairness earned him the respect and friendship of countless clients and colleagues.

In 1965, Gary married the love of his life, Gayle Edler of Newport Beach. Together they built a life centered on family, friendships, and service to others. Gary was a proud and devoted father to Leslie Gayle (Stacey Lindberg), G. Gartzmann II (Margaryta “Margo” Nekrasova), and Lara Blaine (Robert Wood). He was a loving grandfather to Pheona, Maya, Eli, Robert Everett, Amelia, Quinlan, and Blaine, and he now joins in heaven his granddaughter Jamie.

A passionate sailor and dedicated community leader, Gary was an active member of the San Diego Yacht Club, where he raced Starlets, PCs, and competed in many Transpac Races. Gary served as Commodore in 1979 and was instrumental in founding the SDYC Sailing Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting national and international amateur sailing, maritime education, and competitive opportunities for young people who might not otherwise have access. His leadership and vision helped open doors for generations of aspiring sailors.

Gary’s commitment to service extended throughout San Diego. A member of the downtown Rotary Club since 1972, he also served on the Board of Directors for the Maritime Museum of San Diego, the Linda Vista Boys Club, and supported Rady Children’s Hospital, among many other charitable and civic organizations. His steady presence, generosity, and sense of responsibility strengthened every institution he touched.

Above all, Gary will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his deep love of the sea, and his enduring commitment to the San Diego community. His life reflected tradition, service, and a belief in creating opportunity for others.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Gayle; his devoted children and their spouses; his cherished grandchildren; and a community that is better because of his leadership and kindness.
