FULLERTON, Calif. — Long Beach State closed out competition at the Ben Brown Invitational, hosted by California State University, Fullerton, after two days of competition featuring teams from across Southern California and the West Coast.

Men

The Beach opened the day with a school-record performance in the 4×100-meter relay as freshman Sebastian Lopez, senior Tristyn Flores, sophomore Vincent Jones and freshman Trey Sheron won the event in 39.52 seconds. The mark broke the previous Long Beach State record of 39.66 set in 2008 and marked the group’s first outdoor relay of the season.

Freshman Cameron Simmons added a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing in 14.14 seconds.

In the discus, freshman Diego Herrera-Vandrell placed 14th with a throw of 41.91 meters (137 feet, 6 inches).

Long Beach State posted a strong showing in the 1,500 meters, led by sophomore Miles Jordan, who won the event in 3:48.18. redshirt junior Lance Denhalter finished fifth in 3:56.88, junior Cameron Rhone placed sixth in 3:57.19 and Brandon Day recorded a time of 4:12.80.

Rhone returned in the 800 meters and won the event with a mark of 1:50.33, tying his personal best. Denhalter added a sixth-place finish in 1:51.89, redshirt sophomore Tarron Johnson finished seventh in 1:52.13 and Cash Obando posted a time of 1:56.97.

In the 200 meters, Lopez finished 10th in 21.49, while Jones followed in 11th at 21.50. Junior Jaden Dasher recorded a time of 22.15.

Senior Milo Orona competed in both the 100 meters and shot put, running 11.38 in the sprint and recording a mark of 12.42 meters (40 feet, 9 inches) in the shot put.

Women

In the field events, sophomore Mai Ricks led the Beach in the discus with an eighth-place finish at 45.24 meters (148 feet, 5 inches). Sammy Chang followed in ninth with a throw of 44.00 meters (144 feet, 4 inches), while junior Abigail Gavrilovic recorded 37.35 meters (122 feet, 6 inches).

Freshman Zamaria Mack finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.13 seconds, competing in the event for the first time in her collegiate career.

The women’s 1,500 meters featured multiple Beach runners, led by Alyssa Tapanes in seventh at 4:43.84. Darcy Ray finished eighth in 4:45.23, Sharice Laygo placed 10th with a 4:49.28 time, Elisa Rodriguez ran 5:00.69 and Natasha King posted 5:05.58.

In the 100 meters, senior Daryana Hall ran 12.25, while sophomore Jonelle Scott finished with a time of 12.41.

Jaliyah Davis led Long Beach State in the 200 meters with a time of 25.06, followed closely by Hall at 25.09.

Ricks also competed in the shot put, placing 11th with a mark of 12.49 meters (40 feet, 11¾ inches). Gavrilovic finished 15th at 12.05 meters (39 feet, 6½ inches).

The Beach closed the day in the 4×400-meter relay as senior Trinity Barnett, sophomore Milani Bell, freshman Zamaria Mack, sophomore Jaliyah Davis and senior Daryana Hall placed third in 3:47.46.

In the 5,000 meters, Brooke Willoughby led Long Beach State with a time of 18:22.68, while Marikay Schwab ran 18:26.19 and Nataly Toledo finished in 18:56.06.

Rodriguez also competed in the 800 meters, placing 15th in 2:19.07.

Long Beach State now turns its attention to three meets later this month as the Beach prepares to split competition between the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival, the UCLA Legends Meet and the Trojan Invitational on March 27-28.
