The special meeting was scheduled to happen Friday at Phoebe Hearst Elementary following weeks of controversy over the removal of a beloved teacher.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento City Unified School District announced Friday’s special board meeting was canceled due to safety concerns and advice from legal counsel.Â
The special meeting was planned to take place at Phoebe Hearst Elementary following weeks of controversy after beloved sixth-grade teacher Jeanine Rupert was reassigned to another school.
Parents, teachers and students have organized multiple protests since Rupert’s removal.Â
Rupert was reassigned after the district said she gave students hammers and a crowbar to help her remove carpet in her classroom, allegedly causing over $22,000 in damages.Â
ABC10 previously reported it happened during a flea infestation, but the district later said the infestation had been eliminated prior to the carpet-ripping incident.Â
A second teacher, Mark Henrikson, was placed on leave by the district after he spoke publicly in support of Rupert.Â
As frustrations grew among the community, parents served School Board President Jasjit Singh a notice of intent to recall him.
In a letter to families, the district said the meeting was canceled “after careful consideration of new information received this morning,” but it was not clear what the new information was.Â
The district said Singh will host a virtual listening session on Nov. 3 and more information will be shared in the coming days.Â
