On March 14, 2026, at approximately 2:29 AM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to the area of Coleman Avenue and Hedding Street for a report of a hit-and-run traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist. The preliminary investigation revealed the following:
A 2023 blue Tesla sedan, occupied by an adult male driver, was traveling northbound on Coleman Avenue approaching Hedding Street at a high rate of speed. The Tesla sedan struck an adult male on a bicycle who was crossing Coleman Avenue from west to east just south of the intersection outside of any marked crosswalk.Â
The suspect vehicle fled the scene prior to police arrival.
The bicyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Officers utilized Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras to locate the direction of travel for the suspect vehicle. Officers located the suspect vehicle unoccupied away from the scene.
The driver of the suspect vehicle later returned to the scene and exhibited symptoms of being under the influence. Officers took the driver into custody and he was later booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.Â
This incident is the city’s 5th fatal collision and 5th traffic death of 2026.
The identity of the decedent will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.
