While he remains locked up in the Oakland County Jail with bond set at $1 million, the Rochester teen accused of stabbing another on the Oakland University campus in February is awaiting an April court date.

Joshua Damon Edwards, 19, charged with assault with intent to commit murder, is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on April 20 before Oakland County Circuit Judge Daniel O’Brien. The case against Edwards was bound over to the higher court on March 12 following a preliminary exam in 52-3 District Court. Edwards was arraigned the next day in circuit court.

At his arraignment in the lower court in February, Edwards’ attorney told the judge that the stabbing was in “lawful self defense” after Edwards’ personal property was taken from him.

Another Rochester man, Jason Anthony Ford, Jr., 18, is facing a misdemeanor charge of aggravated assault in connection with the incident. He was arraigned on March 4, and posted 10% of a $2,500 bond a few days later. He was released on a tether, and has since been accused of violating probation. A bond violation hearing is scheduled for March 17..

The stabbing happened outside of Van Wagoner Hall on Feb.5, according to OU Police Chief Mark Gordon, and two suspects — later identified as Edwards and Ford — fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV prior to police officers arriving. The male victim, who is not an OU student,  was stabbed multiple times and subsequently let inside Van Wagoner Hall by an unidentified person, Gordon said.

Police responded to the scene that night at around 8:15 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls about a fight in progress, Gordon said.

Edwards was arrested on Feb. 10. He has no prior criminal history.

Assault with intent to commit murder is punishable by up to life in prison.
