LOS ANGELES, CA — A new report reveals that the Trump Administration so far has deported about half as many people from Mexico annually as the Biden Administration did each year.
Nearly 300,000 Mexicans were deported annually during the Biden administration compared with just over 144,000 during Trump’s first year back in office, according to data compiled by Quinto Elemento Lab, a nonprofit investigative journalism organization in Mexico City, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“The deportation policy that Trump has rolled out does not appear to be as severe as in previous years in numerical terms,” said Efraín Tzuc, data analyst with Quinto Elemento Lab, told the Times.
The analysis also indicated that although migration is often driven by economic issues, many of the people deported came from states experiencing cartel violence.
The data shows that the drop in deportations, in part, stems from fewer people crossing the border due to beefed up border security throughout the U.S. last year, according to analysis by the Los Angeles Times.
