PEORIA, Ariz. — The Padres beat the Seattle Mariners 9-6 on Tuesday at Peoria Stadium.
Batters box: Left fielder Gavin Sheets and shortstop Xander Bogaerts hit back-to-back home runs off Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo in the second inning. Sheets’ home run was his second of the spring and Bogaerts’ was his first. … First baseman Nick Castellanos hit his second home run of the spring in the seventh inning off Mariners closer Andres Muñoz. … Designated hitter Ty France hit his first homer of the spring and Jase Bowen came off the bench to hit his fourth homer, tied with Nick Schnell for the team lead this spring. … Catcher Rodolffo Duran hit his second homer of the spring in the eighth inning.
Balls and strikes: Right-hander Germán Márquez struck out nine, tops among all Padres pitchers this spring, while allowing three runs on three hits, a walk and a hit batter over five innings. … Right-hander Matt Waldron (hemorrhoid surgery) made his first appearance since Feb. 21, striking out two and allowing a run on two hits in two innings. Waldron threw 24 of his 33 pitches for strikes. Waldron remains likely to continue building his pitch count on the injured list at the start of the season. … Left-hander Adrián Morejón allowed a run on three hits — including two infield singles, one of which was 110 mph ball of his backside — in the eighth inning. Morejón remained in the game after a brief visit with the trainer. … Right-hander David Morgan allowed a run on two hits in the ninth inning.
Extra bases: On a day in which it was 95 degrees by the end of the game, Castellanos — who is learning first base this spring — was the first Padre to play all nine innings in the field this spring. He tracked a hop to record the out on a long throw from Jake Cronenworth and in the seventh inning made a diving stop to his right to help Waldron out of the inning. … Left fielder Ramón Laureano exited for precautionary reasons after he was hit by an 89 mph changeup in the back from Muñoz in the seventh inning. … The Padres wore black hats with a green interlocking “SD” for St. Patrick’s Day. A bagpiper also played in the morning meeting and on the backfields during morning work.
On deck: The Padres are off for the second time this spring on Wednesday. Right-hander Michael King will start Thursday’s 6:10 p.m. game against the Chicago White Sox in Peoria.
