The Rancho Palos Verdes City Council will receive an update Tuesday night after accelerated land movement was detected in the coastal Los Angeles County community.
The city believes that the rain from earlier this year could be to blame for the accelerated movement. On Tuesday as part of its regular meeting, the council will consider extending the local emergency declaration and the PV Drive South motorcycle prohibition ordinance for 60 days.
The bimonthly land movement updates and the extension of the local emergency have been ongoing since 2023. Tuesday’s meeting comes after the most recent data collected in February showed that, since January, the Abalone Cove Landslide accelerated by an average of five percent to approximately 2.24 inches a week.
The Portuguese Bend landslide accelerated by an average of 7.1% to about one-and-a-half inches a week.
The city released a new tool to help see that movement using heat maps.

The map shows that each month since September 2025, the darker yellow area expanded with a big jump from December through January to January through February.
The regular city council meeting starts at 7 p.m. in person at Hesse Park, or on Zoom on the city’s website.
The update at Tuesday night’s meeting is part of the city’s landslide monitoring process.
