FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Fresno Unified School District will not take part in a Cesar Chavez celebration scheduled for Wednesday, following allegations that surfaced surrounding the prominent labor movement figure.
The district announced Monday that its students and staff will no longer participate in the annual celebration or the march to the Cesar Chavez Adult Education Center that traditionally follows.
The legacy event had been set to begin at 9 a.m. at Warner’s Theatre in Downtown Fresno and was expected to feature student performances, speakers, and an essay contest.
The celebration is organized by the Latino Educational Issues Roundtable, whose website now shows the event has been canceled.
Andres Chavez, grandson of Cesar Chavez and executive director of the National Chavez Center, had also been scheduled to speak.
Events like this one, held across California and the nation, are intended to honor Cesar Chavez’s civil rights legacy and his contributions to dignity and respect for farmworkers.
The United Farm Workers said it does not have direct reports or firsthand knowledge of the allegations but issued a statement calling them “serious enough that we feel compelled to take urgent steps to learn more and provide space for people who may have been victimized.”
Cesar Chavez Day is observed on March 31.
