The San Francisco 49ers suffered a new free agency loss on Tuesday evening. This time, it came in the form of offensive lineman Spencer Burford.
According to a report from ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, Burford has signed a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders to reunite with Klint Kubiak.
“Free agent guard Spencer Burford is expected to join the Las Vegas Raiders, per source,” Fowler wrote on X. “Burford, who visited the team today, reunites with head coach Klint Kubiak from their San Francisco days.”
While not a household name, Burford has been a key piece for the 49ers over the last few years. He has brought quality starts to San Francisco and excellent depth when not a starter.
Burford was originally drafted by San Francisco in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft at No. 134 overall. Since being selected, he has seen a lot of playing time with the 49ers.
What Has Spencer Burford Done for the San Francisco 49ers?
Right off the bat as a rookie, Burford became an instant starter. He made 16 starts during his rookie season with the team. He went on to start a total of 38 games during his tenure with the 49ers.
Standing in at 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds, Burford never became a “star” in San Francisco. Instead, he was the kind of consistent offensive lineman that every contender needs to have.
Now, he’ll look to head to the Raiders and become a big part of the protection for likely No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza. Las Vegas has been aggressive on the offensive line this offseason, also signing former Baltimore Ravens star center Tyler Linderbaum.
Taking a Closer Look at John Lynch and the 49ers’ Offseason
It has been very clear since the start of NFL free agency that the 49ers are all-in on pursuing a championship in 2026. They have been taking aggressive swings and making big-time additions.
Most notably, San Francisco was able to come to terms on a three-year, $60.4 million contract with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers star wide receiver Mike Evans. After badly needing wide receiver help last season, Evans should fix the issue.
San Francisco also reunited with linebacker Dre Greenlaw on a one-year, $7.5 million deal after one season with the Denver Broncos. Lynch has also added offensive tackle Vederian Lowe, cornerback Nate Hobbs, wide receiver Christian Kirk, linebacker Luke Gifford, center Brett Toth, and re-signed kicker Eddy Pineiro.
Needless to say, it has been a busy offseason for the 49ers. Lynch is making a statement with his aggressive moves.
Losing Burford will leave San Francisco without valuable depth on the offensive line, but he’ll be replaced either in free agency or the 2026 NFL Draft.
