Every donation made to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank goes a long way toward providing food assistance to more than one million neighbors each month. While the Food Bank appreciates the community’s generosity, many supporters ask whether they can receive tax benefits from charitable donations, especially if they take the standard deduction rather than itemize.
While tax rules can change and individual situations vary, the following are a few highlights to keep in mind as you plan your giving this year.
A New Deduction for More Donors
You can now deduct cash charitable donations even if you don’t itemize:
Up to $1,000 for single filers
Up to $2,000 for married couples filing jointly
This deduction is available in addition to the standard deduction, which for 2026 is $16,100 for single filers and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly. (Gifts to donor-advised funds are excluded.)
Extra Benefits for Donors 65+
If you are 65 or older, you may qualify for a higher standard deduction, plus an additional deduction through 2028 of up to $6,000 for individuals or $12,000 for married couples if both spouses qualify. Income limits apply.
Tax-Smart Giving Options
Donating appreciated stock or real estate may help eliminate capital gains tax.
If you are 70½ or older, you can make a tax-free distribution of up to $111,000 from your IRA directly to the LA Regional Food Bank in 2026, which can satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD).
For Those Who Itemize
Cash gifts may be deducted up to 60% of AGI.
You must give at least 0.5% of AGI to claim a charitable deduction.
Top earners now receive a reduced tax benefit per dollar deducted.
