A parent staging a sit-in at the Natomas Unified School District office was arrested on trespassing charges Tuesday afternoon, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

A video shows Sacramento Police Department officers putting Jessica Vroman in the back of a police vehicle outside of the district office as a crowd of Natomas parents, teachers and students chant “shame!”

Vroman, a Natomas parent, was staging a sit-in at the district office with her son, chronicling her day via videos on her Instagram. She said in a video that they were staging a sit-in until someone met with them about the ongoing teachers strike.

District spokesperson Deidra Powell said that Vroman and her child unlawfully entered the district office, which has been closed since the beginning of the teachers strike. Powell said that she was asked to leave and described her actions as “concerning.”

“This individual was not authorized to be on-site,” Powell wrote in a follow-up statement. “All visitors are expected to follow established security protocols and respect facility guidelines. Exterior signage clearly indicates who individuals can contact for assistance and how to access support from the District.“

Vroman was taken off the premises at around 12:50 p.m. Her son was left in Davis’ care.

Outside the district office, more than 200 parents, teachers and students were rallying in support of Vroman’s sit-in at the time she was arrested, according to multiple rally attendees.

Natomas Teachers Association is currently in its sixth consecutive day of striking for raises and improved benefits. The union and the district most recently met for bargaining Sunday afternoon, but no agreement was reached despite new health care proposals on both sides.

“Instead of working to get our teachers and students back to school, NUSD is arresting a parent who was peacefully asking for a dialogue,” NTA President Nico Vaccaro said.

“Our plan offers a clear path to ending the staffing crisis and the strike, but the district refuses to act despite their significant financial resources. To get our community back to the classroom, NUSD must finally commit to the investments that will end this crisis once and for all.”
