The buffet, once a staple of American dining, has thinned out in recent years. Between rising food costs and a pandemic-era shutdown that forced many communal, self-serve concepts to rethink their model, the classic table buffet restaurant has thinned out in recent years. Still, a handful of spots across Orange County (many relegating the dining style to Sunday brunches) continue to keep the format alive, and well worth a trip.

Fun fact before you dive in: Buffet dining, while often seen as quintessentially American, draws inspiration from service à la française, a lavish mid-1500s style of dining in which multiple dishes were arranged on a table at once, allowing guests to serve themselves. The word itself comes from an Old French word, bufet, meaning a bench or sideboard used for displaying dishes of food. Later in the 18th century, Sweden popularized its own buffet tradition, the smörgåsbord, which they introduced to the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. The format soon went full American when the El Rancho Vegas casino debuted the “Buckaroo Buffet” in 1946 as a way to keep gambling customers fed and spending.

This list focuses strictly on traditional buffets, the kind with full spreads of prepared dishes and complete meals laid out for the taking. That means you won’t find all-you-can-eat hot pot, Korean barbecue or other AYCE formats here; those deserve a roundup of their own.
