PAUMA VALLEY, Calif. — The San Diego State men’s golf team shot an even-par-284 to finish 12th at the Pauma Valley Invitational on Wednesday. The Aztecs moved up one place from Tuesday’s round, finishing at 8-over 860 for the tournament on the par-71, 7,311-yard Pauma Valley Country Club.
No. 20 Georgia Tech and No. 15 Tennessee shared the team win at -16 with Georgia Tech shooting a 6-under 278 and Tennessee carding a 5-under 279 in the final round. No. 3 LSU and No. 3 Florida tied for third at -13, while No. 7 Oklahoma State (-8) rounded out the top 5. The Aztecs, who are 28th in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings, bested No. 42 San Diego (+8), Toledo (+13), host LMU (+13) and Colorado State (+31) in the loaded 16-team field.
Sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) was SDSU’s top finisher, tying for 14th out of 92 golfers at 3-under 210 following his second straight even-par 71. Hirayama logged five birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey.
Sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia), the third-ranked player in the latest Scoreboard ratings, was a shot back of Hirayama in a tie for 16th at -2 after shooting a 2-under 69. Takis logged five birdies and three bogeys.
Senior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand), who was named the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Week on Friday after taking third at last week’s R.E. Lamkin Invitational, tied for 41st at +2 after an even-par 71 today. He had four birdies, but also two bogeys and a double bogey.
Freshman Beau Sahr (Eagle, Idaho) (75) tied for 83rd at +13 while senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) (73) came in 90th at +16.
SMU’s Williams Sides and Tennessee’s Lance Simpson shared medalist honors at -10, two shots ahead of Oklahoma State’s Preston Stout (-8).
San Diego State next competes in The Goodwin, March 26-28, in Stanford, California.
