U.S. Coast Guard crews have been called in to help secure several containers left dangling and in danger of falling from a cargo ship at the Port of Long Beach.
At least 32 containers were lost overboard during the OOCL Sunflower’s voyage from Taiwan to the West Coast, officials said.
The vessel encountered rough seas, with waves reaching up to 20 feet, before arriving at the Port of Long Beach last week. Due to concerns over the stability of the remaining cargo, the ship was kept offshore for several days while crews assessed the condition of the load.

Sky5 video shows some of the containers still onboard were crushed, twisted and precariously hanging from the ship. Crews are now working to ensure the remaining containers can be safely offloaded without falling into the harbor.
While the exact contents of the containers have not been confirmed, officials said some may contain hazardous materials.
The incident echoes a similar event in September, when roughly 75 containers fell from another vessel near the same port, spilling cargo into the harbor and triggering a massive cleanup effort.
