With new names on the roster and higher expectations, many fans focused on Russell Westbrook’s arrival.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Kings opened their season at Golden 1 Center with a sold-out crowd and renewed hope for what this year could bring.

Fans filled Downtown Commons as opening night energy pulsed through Sacramento,  from drumlines to the sound of cowbells echoing outside the arena.

“Been here during the glory days, the dark days, hopefully more glory days,” said long-time Kings fan Salli Stayner.

With new names on the roster and higher expectations, many fans focused on Russell Westbrook’s arrival and what his intensity could bring this year.

“I am the biggest Russell Westbrook fan, honestly. I got my jersey right here. I am hoping he can sign it,” said Kings fan Elijah Nixon.

“His passion, fire, demeanor, emotion has carried well over his career. I think it’s going to help,” said Kings fan Peter “Sactown Pete” Masih.

Others were excited but cautious.

“I have concern about the roster, but they are local team and you got to root for them,” said lifelong Kings fan Addison Skove.

Last season’s finish still stings, but many believe this year could end differently.

“Hopefully they make it to the playoffs,” said Kings fan Jose Gio.

“I don’t think so, but I hope they try,” said longtime Utah Jazz fan Scott Stayner.

At DOCO, fans said it was about the pride, the atmosphere, and the possibility.

“It’s a party out here,” Gio said.

And with a 105-104 win over the Utah Jazz on opening night, the beam stood tall in the sky for the first time this season. Another opportunity comes Sunday against the Los Angeles Lakers.
