San Francisco police officers will receive a pay bump after the city and the Police Officers Association reached a tentative deal.

The deal would increase officers’ pay by a 14% pay raise over the next four years.

In addition to the pay increase, the deal includes a retention bonus of 3% for officers with at least five years of service.

Negotiations began in January, and it included mediation between the parties.

“This agreement is a balanced one,” Louis Wong, the President of the SFPOA said in a press release. It provides meaningful improvements that recognize the dedication, sacrifice, and professionalism of our officers, while also being fiscally responsible at a time when San Francisco is facing a significant budget deficit.”

The San Francisco Police Department has faced staffing shortages and issues retaining officers.

The mayor has made public safety a top priority, so pay raises to compete with other departments don’t come as a surprise.
