The annual Sacramento Cesar Chavez March has been canceled following the disturbing allegations against the labor leader.

Yesterday, The New York Times reported that Chavez sexually assaulted multiple children while they participated in the farmworkers movement. Chavez is also alleged to have raped his co-leader of the organization that became United Farm Workers, Dolores Huerta.

“The Sacramento Cesar Chavez March Coalition – is cancelling the event due to the horrific instances of sexual harm that have come out against Cesar Chavez. I think I can speak for everyone that these appalling acts against women and children can not be ignored or swept under the rug,” organizers said in a statement.

The Sacramento march adds to a growing list of event cancellations across the country meant to honor Chavez.

Organizers said they remain committed to advocating for the rights of immigrants and workers and will shift resources to upcoming events.

Mayor Kevin McCarty said the city is taking the allegations against Chavez, who died in 1993, seriously. He has appointed a council subcommittee to rename Cesar Chavez Plaza in downtown.
