Homicide investigation

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a man found with a gunshot wound last Sunday in Sacramento’s South Natomas neighborhood.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, officers were called to the 1500 block of Waterwheel Drive in a residential neighborhood just south of West El Camino Avenue. Officers responded to reports of a man with a gunshot wound on the ground, according to a Sacramento Police Department news release.

Officers arrived at the scene and found the man with at least one gunshot wound, police said. The shooting victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office on Thursday confirmed that Elijah David Lopez, 23, of North Highlands was the shooting victim in the Waterwheel drive homicide.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators took over the shooting investigation, collecting evidence and speaking to witnesses.

On Wednesday evening, polices said the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting remained under investigation, and homicide detectives did not have any suspect information to release.

Detectives asked anyone with information relevant to this fatal shooting to call the Police Department at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357.
