San Jose city crews Friday morning covered a plaque honoring Cesar Chavez at the downtown plaza bearing his name on Market Street.

The move comes days after sexual abuse allegations surfaced against the late civil rights leader.

The city has begun cataloging all the Cesar Chavez-related monuments to determine where they are on city property or within city limits.

The city council plans to hold public hearing on the next steps, as they consider to rename sites in a way that support the movement rather than a sole person.

Santa Clara County said it will still recognize March 31 as an official holiday this year, but instead will focus on honoring the farmworker movement. Duong says when it comes to renaming sites, community input is vital.

Executive Director of Amigos de Guadalupe Maritza Maldonado, who a few years ago purchased the Chavez’s family home in east San Jose, said the house will now be “La Casa del Pueblo” or house of the people.
