A Coronado man who died earlier this week was identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner on Friday morning.
James Joseph Berta, 78, was riding his bicycle Tuesday at a little after 1:30 p.m., heading south on Silver Strand, also known as state Route 78, when his bike collided with an SUV at Tulagi Road. That intersection, which is near the Naval Amphibious Base, is south of the Hotel Del Coronado.
Berta died at 1:49 p.m. that same day as a result of blunt force traumatic injuries, according to the ME’s office.
Responding officers and the vehicle’s driver unsuccessfully rendered aid to Berta, who died at the scene, according to Coronado police.
Investigators said that they did not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the incident.
