Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers kicked off their West Coast trip on Wednesday with a late-night overtime win vs. the Anaheim Ducks.
Noah Cates played hero in overtime, cashing in on the second-chance effort after Matvei Michkov could not bury the winner. Was it a conventional goal? Not even close. But the Flyers center got it done, getting a big two points for his team.
I wanted to tab the game as the “Luke Glendening game” because man, he was everywhere. It seemed like every time he was on the ice, he was making things happen. Glendening scored his first goal of the season and first as a Flyer as well.
I also liked what I saw from Sean Couturier on Wednesday. He and Glendening were playing the game that defined turning defense into chances. I thought Garnet Hathaway played pretty well, too, but just got a little unlucky at times. Lukas Dostal robbed him once or twice.
Shocker, shocker; Owen Tippett looked phenomenal, again, and added yet another goal to his season tally. He has just looked so good lately. Tippett is skating so fast and so strong, making things happen himself.
Lastly, Dan Vladar turned in ANOTHER performance allowing two or fewer goals. Vladar stopped 34 of 36 shots vs. the Ducks. He has just been out of this world for the Flyers. Questions about how long he can keep this up have been raised, but Vladar just keeps getting better.
Philly Hockey Now: Now, for what you’ve missed since the last daily. The Flyers signed Notre Dame center Cole Knuble to an ELC on Tuesday. On Wednesday, they inked Owen McLaughlin to an AHL contract.
The idea of trading Jett Luchanko was floated by Craig Button. Here is why the Flyers should show patience with him instead.
NHL Rumors & News
ESPN: “It was never Jack’s to own,” said Philip Pritchard, vice president of the resource center and curator for the Hockey Hall of Fame. Hughes wants his golden goal puck back from the Hockey Hall of Fame. The HHOF said no chance. Greg Wyshynski has the latest on the saga.
Dallas Morning News: Jason Robertson could be a coveted RFA if he can’t get a deal done with Dallas before July 1st. That’s if he even gets there. GM Jim Nill says that resigning Robertson will be a top priority for the Stars.
Sportsnet: The Flyers signed one of their BU prospects. So did the Washington Capitals. Cole Hutson is in DC and made his highly anticipated NHL debut on Wednesday. Of course, he capped it off with a goal.
Daily Faceoff: Hutson was not the only BU star to sign an NHL deal. Cole Eiserman has inked his three-year ELC with the New York Islanders, kicking in next season. Eiserman will join Rocky Thomposon and the Bridgeport Islanders for the rest of the season.
NHLtraderumors.me: The Anaheim Ducks made a surprising move, making Mason McTavish a healthy scratch ahead of their Monday bout vs. the Montreal Canadiens. That continued on Wednesday vs. the Flyers, with the young center a healthy scratch once again.
The Athletic ($): The GM meetings recently wrapped up, and reportedly, things got a little heated. It began with the debate over goalie interference, which has been a topic of discussion for some time. Then, Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky got into a clash with Gary Bettman over the slipped standard on head shots in the league.
Good for Tulsky. Whether he was forced to do it by Canes’ owner Tom Dundon or not, good on Tuslky for going toe-to-toe with Bettman.
