SAN JOSE, CA — The Counter, a popular custom-made burger restaurant at San Jose’s upscale Santana Row, is closed after health inspectors found cockroaches in multiple areas.
The Santa Clara County Department of Environmental Health responded to a customer complaint by conducting two inspections at the restaurant this month. Inspectors found multiple cockroaches throughout the facility, including in the women’s restroom, near the ice machine, at the bar, and on top of trays, according to NBC Bay Area. Health inspectors also found cockroaches at the restaurant during inspections in 2023 and 2025, records show.
Health officials ordered the facility to close immediately due to regulations requiring food facilities to be “free of vermin,” according to a report from KTVU.
Manager Ricky Singh told NBC Bay Area that the restaurant has hired two separate pest-control companies, and hopes to reopen after a follow-up inspection. The facility can reopen after inspectors confirm that the issue has been resolved. The Santa Clara County Department of Environmental Health told NBC Bay Area that the restaurant has not requested a follow-up inspection as of Wednesday.
