(KRON) — The Oakland Police Department is cracking down on dirt bikes and ATVs when riders are involved in unlawful activities.

Last weekend, West Oakland patrol officers seized six dirt bikes and ATVs after riders violated traffic laws and endangered pedestrians.

“We understand the community’s frustration with reckless riding and are taking action to address these concerns. Individuals involved often ride in large groups and use illegally modified dirt bikes or motorbikes,” OPD wrote.

In some situations, officers may observe, rather than directly intervene, based on safety assessments for the community and officers, OPD said.

Attempting to stop a single rider in a large group can be dangerous and may put officers at risk, the police department explained.

“We encourage everyone to report incidents and stay alert,” OPD wrote.
