There isn’t any one thing that has gotten San Diego State’s women’s basketball team to 26-5 this season.
One game, it might be 3-point shooting. The next night, the defense steps up. Or the bench. Or individuals like Mountain West Player of the Year Nala Williams or leading scorer Naomi Panganiban.
“We’ve been very resilient and opportunistic as a team,” coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said recently. “We have a lot of tools.”
The Aztecs will likely need to call on several of their tools on Sunday afternoon, when they host McNeese (29-5) in the second round of the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament. The 2 p.m. game will be played at USD’s Jenny Craig Pavilion because the men’s NCAA Tournament is being played on SDSU’s campus.
“McNeese is a very good team,” said Terry-Hutson. “It is a very aggressive defensive team. They attack you defensively all over the court. They don’t shoot the three as well as we do.
“But we need to protect the ball. We can’t let this become a turnover game, because that is what McNeese wants. Their offense transitions off the defense and the turnover. They want to get the ball on the turnover and drive to the basket.”
McNeese won the Southland Conference during the regular season, then lost to Stephen F. Austin 71-59 in the championship game of the conference tournament. The Cowgirls then upset No. 1 regional seed Texas A&M 68-48 in Thursday’s first round of the WBIT.
“McNeese took Texas A&M out of its game,” Terry-Hutson said after reviewing video of the game. “They wore down the Aggies one ballhandler. McNeese presses. They put game-length pressure on the ball. And although they play with four guards, they do a great job on the boards.”
McNeese forced Texas A&M into 18 turnovers and had 11 steals. The Cowgirls scored 20 points off turnovers and 11 on fast breaks.
“We have to be disciplined,” said Terry-Hutson. “We have to protect the ball. And we can’t be fouling them when they drive. Texas A&M did that a lot and McNeese scored 18 points on free throws.”
The Aztecs suffered one key injury in Thursday night’s 61-55 win over UC Irvine at USD. Starting forward Kennedy Lee left the game during the third quarter after being struck just outside her left eye by an elbow. She returned to the game, however, and is expected to play Sunday.
