LONG BEACH, Calif. — The No. 13 University of Hawai’i beach volleyball team continued round-robin action in the Big West Challenge with a pair of matches Saturday at Rosie’s Dog Beach in Long Beach, Calif. The Rainbow Wahine (9-10) dropped a 4-1 decision to third-ranked Cal Poly before coming back to blank CSU Bakersfield, 5-0, later in the day.

It was the second straight day that UH split its matches after defeating Sacramento State and dropping a match to host and 11th-ranked Long Beach State on Friday. UH stands at 2-2 after the second day of the three-day tourney. 

In the first match of the day, the BeachBows couldn’t keep up with Cal Poly (16-2) as the Mustangs won four courts in straight sets. UH, however, was able to snag a point from the Mustangs as the pairing of Emily Heintzelman and Kiera Cornman rallied past Hannah Byers and Maddy Byrne 12-21, 21-17, 17-15. In the end, though the Mustangs were able to pick up their fifth straight win over ‘Bows. 

The BeachBows responded later in the day with an efficient performance against CSU Baskersfield. UH dominated in all five flights, not dropping a single set in picking up their fourth shutout of the year. The most impressive performance came at the No. 3 flight where the duo of Julia Thelle and Sophie Buschmann breezed past Sophia Anderson and Olivia Ostler 21-6, 21-13. UH also got the best of former BeachBow Kendall Kaelin and her sister Vivi Kaelin a at the No. 2 flight as Sydney Miller and Caprice Lorenzo picked up a 21-14, 21-15 victory.

The BeachBows will conclude the Big West Challenge Sunday with matches vs. UC Davis (6:10 am HT) and CSUN (10:50 am HT).
