Amyis Coogler was convicted of second-degree murder for the 2022 shooting of Corey Shearer at a Rancho Cordova party, prosecutors say.
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — A man was convicted by a jury in relation to a 2022 deadly shooting at a Rancho Cordova house party, according to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.Â
On Thursday, Amyis Coogler was convicted of second-degree murder of Corey Shearer, a former Amador football star.Â
On Aug. 5 2022, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office received a reported of a man shot at a party in the 3000 block of Ramsgate Way. When deputies arrived, they found Shearer on the lawn with four gunshot wounds.Â
Shearer was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.Â
Prosecutors said witnesses provided a description of the shooter who fled the scene. Video footage showed Coogler hiding in a neighbor’s backyard after the shooting, according to prosecutors.Â
Coogler was identified as the suspect and arrested in February 2024.Â
DNA evidence collected during the investigation matched Coogler including a gun that was used in the shooting, prosecutors said. The jury found true that Coogler used a firearm causing death, according to prosecutors.Â
Coogler faces a maximum sentence of 40 years to life prison. His sentencing is scheduled for April 10 at 9 a.m.
