Ranchers delivering 500+ bales of hay to western Nebraska wildfire victims

OAKLAND, Neb. (WOWT) – A convoy of 15 semis loaded with hay left Oakland Monday morning to help ranchers affected by wildfires in western Nebraska.

Justin Smith, of Craig, organized the relief effort, which departed at about 7 a.m. Monday. Each truck carried 34 bales, totaling 510 bales across 15 loads.

The route starts from Oakland, takes Highway 77 south to Fremont, then Highway 30 west to Grand Island, then Interstate 80 to Gothenburg where they drop everything off.

Smith said he and his family farm and ranch. They have been impacted by fires in the past.

He posted a plea on Facebook to see if others would join him and donate hay. The effort has grown from there.

In the latest update, First Alert 6 was told the Morrill Fire is 98% contained. According to watchduty.org, the fire has burned 643,074 acres, making it the largest wildfire in state history.

Firefighters continued to patrol and monitor the fire’s perimeter and interior on Sunday, looking for any lingering hot spots to extinguish.
