FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The man who was shot and killed outside a party in Downtown Fresno on Friday night has been identified as 38-year-old Meharie Kidane, Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto confirmed Monday afternoon.

It happened at about 11 p.m. on March 20 near the intersection of Fulton and Inyo streets.

Chief Casto says there was a nearby party with about 300 people attending when a fight broke out.

The event security cleared the area, and the crowd was pushed out into the street.

That’s when shots were fired.

It happened just hours before the annual FresYes Fest, which already had heightened patrols assigned to the area.

“We had a number of extra units down there, my daughter was there, you know, as a testament that downtown Fresno is still a safe place to be, but violence can break out in a number of places, and tragically, we saw that way too much this weekend,” Chief Casto said.

Kidane was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Fresno police are still searching for the shooter.
