TIBURON, CA — A Bay Area woman has been accused of embezzling more than $1 million from a local family-run business.
Prosecutors say 52-year-old Tiburon resident Lilian Elizabeth Williams began working as a bookkeeper for the family-run business in 2018.
Using her knowledge of the payroll systems, Williams created two profiles for herself and began collecting two paychecks each month, according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.
“She also used the payroll system to allegedly create unauthorized categories of payments, including company loans and reimbursements, which she used to extract money from the victim’s bank account,” prosecutors said.
Williams has since been charged with three counts of grand theft in connection with the scheme. She appeared in court last week and pleaded not guilty to the charges, prosecutors said.
Williams was released on her own recognizance under the condition that she does not provide any accounting services while her case continues, prosecutors said. She is due back in court on March 30.
