OAKLAND — A woman and a man were both wounded multiple times early Tuesday when gunmen opened fire on their vehicle as they drove in East Oakland, authorities said.
The 27-year-old woman and the 33-year-old man were in stable condition. Police have not yet said where they lived or what their relationship is.
The shooting, which caused the activation of the gunshot detection alert system, happened about 12:59 a.m. Tuesday in the 6900 block of Weld Street, a mostly residential area.
According to initial police reports, the woman and man were in a vehicle driving when at least two and possibly more men began shooting at them. It was not immediately clear if the shooters were standing outside or were in a parked vehicle.
The targeted vehicle crashed.
The woman, who was a passenger, was wounded at least three times. The man, who was driving, was hit at least twice.
The shooters fled in a vehicle, possibly a white sedan, authorities said..
A motive for the shooting is under investigation.
Detailed descriptions of the shooters have not been released.
