Due to recent revelations about United Farm Workers union labor leader César Chávez, for whom his March 31 birthday was designated as a holiday for state, county, city of Los Angeles workers — and also, as a Los Angeles Unified School District unassigned day observance — the day-off may include his name, or not, on 2026 website calendars.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a proclamation on March 19 that the last Monday in March is designated as Farm Workers Day.
The California legislature has also announced the state’s March 31 holiday to be renamed as Farmworkers Day (www.sos.ca.gov/state-holidays).
Government offices — Los Angeles city and county — and libraries are closed on Monday. Check ahead for offices and services in other cities in Los Angeles County that may be closed on Monday or Tuesday.
However, Los Angeles Unified School District schools are closed on Friday, March 27 (as an “unassigned day”) in advance of Spring Recess, March 30-April 3 (achieve.lausd.net/calendar). For other Los Angeles County school districts, check your local district’s instructional 2025-2026 calendar for holidays.
California state offices are closed on Tuesday, March 31 and superior courts are closed (www.lacourt.ca.gov/holiday/ui/index.aspx). Also, Department of Motor Vehicles locations are closed on Tuesday, too (dmv.ca.gov/portal/holidays/)
César Chávez Day was not a federal holiday, so banks are open, and mail will be delivered by the United States Postal Service and post offices are open on Monday (Holidays 2026: about.usps.com/newsroom/events).
