According to the resolution in the agenda, during the naming process back in 2002, a top name contender at the time was Mountain View High School.

The resolution said, “Naming the school Cesar E. Chavez High School required the District to pay $100,000 in liquidated damages. Under the Addendum to the Escrow Instructions for Assessor’s Parcel Number 045-150-01 (attached hereto and incorporated by reference), selecting any replacement name other than one of the ten names listed in Recital E would obligate the District to pay an additional $100,000 to the property seller.”

The name change comes as the labor leader, Cesar Chavez, is accused of sexually abusing girls and women during the 1960s and 1970s.
