The Bakersfield Fire Department is looking to buy two new fire engines, according to the Bakersfield City Council agenda for Wednesday.
The city could purchase two Pierce Enforcer fire engines from South Coast Fire Equipment, the California dealership for Pierce Manufacturing. Each would cost $1,180,781 with tax and California tire fees, for a total of $2,361,562, according to the agenda.
The new units are expected to replace ones that have been in service for 13 years. The department currently has 14 fire engines, according to BFD spokesperson Alexander Clark. Clark said a fire engine is kept in service for 10 to 15 years before going into reserve status for five years. Afterwards, it gets auctioned or sold off.
The two Pierce Enforcer engines would replace two of the department’s current frontline engines, which would go into reserve status. This would let BFD sell two engines that were already in the reserve.
