Police tape at crime scene

Granite Bay High School and nearby schools were placed on a precautionary lockdown Tuesday after campus staff received a threat of a shooting at the school.

Sheriff’s deputies searched the entire campus and found no threat, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday. Sheriff’s officials have advised Granite Bay High and nearby schools that they can lift their lockdowns.

A large law enforcement presence was at the campus and in the area as sheriff’s officials investigated the reported threat. Deputies will remain in the area until students at all nearby schools have been sent home at the end of the day.

“We thank the community for avoiding the area and allowing our deputies to work quickly to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” sheriff’s officials said in their Tuesday afternoon update. “We understand how unsettling threats targeting schools are for families and our community, and we will always take them very seriously. Our investigators are now actively working to identify and locate the source of the threat.”

Granite Bay High staff received the threat of a shooting at the school at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday at the campus on Grizzly Way in Granite Bay, sheriff’s officials announced in social media posts.

The high school was immediately placed on lockdown. A sheriff’s school resource officer was on campus at the time and “began working to ensure everyone on campus was safe and that there was not an active shooter,” sheriff’s officials said.

The Sheriff’s Office also has advised nearby schools to initiate a precautionary lockdown.

Other sheriff’s deputies were called to the high school for the reported threat and lockdown. One deputy in a sheriff’s vehicle heading to the Granite Bay campus was involved in a traffic collision at the nearby intersection of Sierra College and Douglas boulevards, said Elise Soviar, a sheriff’s spokesperson.

Soviar said the deputy suffered injuries that were not life-threatening in the vehicle crash. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the vehicle crash.

KCRA reported there was another person involved in the crash that was taken to a hospital. There was no information available about that injured person.
