LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Los Angeles will play a role in America’s big 250th birthday celebration this Fourth of July.

On Thursday, the nonpartisan America250 commission announced the first five host cities for a block party spanning coast to coast. The host cities are Charleston, South Carolina, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, New York City and Los Angeles.

A family-friendly concert is planned at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, as well as a “fan fest event” that will include unnamed musical arts, patriotic tributes and a livestream. Headlining talent is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

The nationwide celebrations will take place from July 3-4.

A new version of the Kool & The Gang classic “Celebration” will be rolled out as part of what organizers call “America’s soundtrack.”

The headlining moment of the nationwide celebration will be a first-ever Times Square ball drop on July 3. It will be the first time in 120 years that the ball drops outside of New Year’s Eve.

Americans will also be able to register official neighborhood events online, where they’ll also have access to digital tool kits, printable signage, celebration ideas and games.
