PACIFIC BEACH, CA — A Santa Cruz resident was behind bars Friday and facing a murder charge for allegedly stabbing another man to death in Pacific Beach as a teenager 32 years ago.
Detectives with the San Diego Police Department Cold Case Unit arrested Jeffry Scott Brandenburg, 50, in his coastal Central California hometown on Thursday in connection with the slaying of 40-year-old Clive Bland, SDPD acting Lt. Chris Leahy said.
Bland was found dead early on the morning of Jan. 2, 1994, in front of a home in the 700 block of Tourmaline Street, just west of Mission Boulevard and south of Turquoise Street. Detectives determined that the Clairemont resident had been fatally assaulted on the beach near Tourmaline Surf Park.
“Despite extensive investigative efforts at the time, the case eventually became cold,” Leahy said.
Eventually, cold-case investigators identified Brandenburg as Bland’s alleged killer via genetic genealogy and other advanced forensic techniques, according to police.
Authorities have disclosed no suspected motive for the deadly stabbing.
Brandenburg was being held without bail at San Diego Central Jail pending arraignment, scheduled for Monday afternoon.
