SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Multiple cats have been found with gunshot wounds in South Los Angeles and are believed to have been shot by a pellet gun.

According to the nonprofit Friends of Normie Rescue — which is caring for the injured cats — the first incident happened in February. They say one of the three cats that were shot did not survive.

“The bullet had done too much damage, so unfortunately, he was put down,” said Ladan Davia with Friends of Normie.

Davia said the second cat that came into their care with gunshot wounds, Albert, survived, but will likely walk with a limp for life.

“Unfortunately, Albert, the bullet had lodged itself in his spine, so the neurologist said there is nothing that we can do for him. If we took it out, he would be paralyzed. If we leave it in, there is a chance that he will be in pain for life,” Davia said. “But, he is on pain management, and we are going that route to avoid, obviously, potential paralysis for him.”

At this time, limited details about the shootings have been released, but Eyewitness News reached out to L.A. Animal Services to see if they’re investigating or aware of the incidents. We have not heard back.

In the meantime, Friends of Normie says this kind of abuse to cats is not uncommon.

“Unfortunately, this has been happening for years. Whether it’s a bullet or another horrific form of injury, these cats have been at risk for a very long time,” Davia said. “We have been trying to get them out, specifically South L.A., for about a year, we have been focusing on that.”

In a press release, animal rights group PETA announced that it is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the shootings.
