LA JOLLA, Calif. – In a battle between Big West rivals, the UC San Diego women’s water polo team was edged by UC Davis, 12-11, Friday at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
With the loss, the Tritons fell to 9-11 overall and 2-4 in conference action. The Aggies improved to 11-12 and 3-2.
In the national rankings, UC San Diego is No. 15 and UC Davis is just behind at No. 16.
For UC San Diego, Emily Cloherty matched her career high with four points, which were earned with two goals and two assists. The Munatones twins combined for six points with each contributing three. Sofia scored three goals and Sydney racked up three assists. Bria Zwashka made 11 saves and grabbed two steals as the Tritons’ goalie.
UC Davis was led by Ashley Wallin, who finished with five points, all on assists. Madison Sparre had two goals and two assists and Gianna Nocetti notched a hat trick. In net, Eva Stein made 10 saves and added a steal.Â
UC Davis held a 33-26 advantage in shots.
Three of the four quarters were even in goals with the Aggies winning the second period by a 3-2 count.
UC Davis scored the game’s first two goals and never trailed. The game was tied on four occasions, the final time when Triton Berkley Sinner scored at 2:43 of the third quarter to make it 10-10. The Aggies responded by scoring two consecutive goals – one at the end of the third and another at the beginning of the fourth.
The final goal of the game came with 2:23 in regulation when Evelyn Burns tallied her second goal of the night and 18th of the season.
UC San Diego had won the previous four meetings against UC Davis.

In its final home game of the season, UC San Diego takes on non-conference opponent Brown Saturday at 4 p.m. It will also be Senior Day with Sofia Munatones, Sydney Munatones, and Allie Bartholomew being honored prior to the first sprint.
