SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Almost four years after Sacramento’s deadliest shooting in history, the two remaining men believed to be responsible are set to appear in court Monday.

The April 3, 2022, shooting along K Street in downtown Sacramento left six people dead and 12 others injured. Of the six killed, three were innocent bystanders, while the others were part of the gunbattle investigators say was gang-related.

Dandrae Martin and Mtula Payton, who have pleaded not guilty, are facing murder and weapons violations. During a previous court appearance, their defense attorneys requested that the trial be relocated out of Sacramento.

It is not clear when that trial could begin, as it was initially set to begin in January 2025.

A third person, Smiley Martin, was also arrested in connection, but he was found dead in jail in June 2024. His listed cause of death was methadone toxicity.

The three victims are 21-year-old Johntaya “JoJo” Alexander, 57-year-old Melinda Davis and 21-year-old Yamile Martinez-Andrade.

The other three people who died were 29-year-old DeVazia Turner, 38-year-old Sergio Harris and 32-year-old Joshua Hoye-Luchessi. Investigators do not consider them victims because of a California law that states people who participate in a shootout that injures or kills others are not victims.
