Two bear cubs that were left to live without their mother due to what is being called a “preventable tragedy” might have just found their silver lining in life. Blondie, a beloved female black bear residing in Monrovia, California, was euthanized by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) after swiping at a woman walking her dog near their den located beneath a nearby residence.

The behavior from Blondie was not out of aggression, but a normal behavior from a mother bear attempting to protect her cubs from a threat. The dog was unharmed, but the woman did sustain minor injuries during the encounter, which inevitably led to the mother bear’s untimely death. DNA testing confirmed that Blondie had been involved in another human-bear encounter back in 2025, which also helped influence the CDFW’s decision.

Two Cubs Survived By Their Mother

Shortly after being taken in by the CDFW, the baby bears were sent to the Ramona Wildlife Center to begin their rehabilitation process. According to World Animal News, the San Diego Humane Society stated that the cubs are now being raised with very little human interaction to keep their “wild” instincts and behaviors intact.

This is done to ensure that the cubs can be released back into the wild someday with little issue. Autumn Welch, Wildlife Operations Manager at San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center, states, “We are doing everything we can to give them the best possible shot at returning to their wild home.”

The Silver Lining For Blondie’s Now Orphaned Cubs

Though the cubs will live on without their mother, there is a shining light at the end of the tunnel. The cubs will now be able to grow up with proper care that can prepare them for the wild, just as Blondie would have wanted for her babies.

This case with Blondie sheds light on a larger issue, though, as human-wildlife conflict can be avoided with proper precautions. Animals are going to protect their young in the wild, just as humans would in the real-world, and according to Peace 4 Animals, they should never be euthanized or killed for doing so.
