SAN DIEGO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — As a way to celebrate all of the women who have made an impact on San Diego, we posted multiple articles throughout the month of March, each featuring five different women.
The month has served as a way to honor the women who shaped our nation’s history and culture since it was first enacted nationally as Women’s History Month in 1987.
Here’s a roundup of the 20 women with ties to San Diego that we featured this month.
Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill
Each of the women in this list were trailblazers in their own right, driving social changes for all American women by either being the first in their field, philanthopists, writers or political influencers.
Some examples include Margaret Helen Copley, who started as a secretary at the Union-Tribune and ended up the publisher of what is now known as The San Diego Union-Tribune, which won two Pulitzer Prizes under her leadership.
There was also Belle Benchley, the first female zoo director in the world, or Sally Ride, the first American woman to go to space.
Narrowing the list to just 20 was difficult, as there are dozens, if not hundreds, of more women who have impacted San Diego in ways big and small.
