Before their game against the Padres, the Giants announced that they had made a trade with the Detroit Tigers.

SF Giants wrote (via X): “RHP Dylan Smith was acquired by the Giants from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for cash considerations. Smith has been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.”

Smith was picked in the third round of the 2021 MLB Draft.

He is coming off a year where he went 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in seven games for the Tigers.

MLB Social Media Reacts To Giants-Tigers Trade

Here’s what people were saying on social media:

Robert Murray: “Sources: The Giants are acquiring reliever Dylan Smith in a trade with the Tigers for cash considerations. Smith was recently designated for assignment by Detroit.”

Clay Snowden: “I wasn’t the biggest Dylan Smith guy, but sending him out for cash considerations feels odd. Clearing 40 man spots is getting harder and harder, but the bullpen isn’t exactly “set”. Thought he was at least worth keeping around”

@CrimsonCoverage: “Former Alabama pitcher Dylan Smith has been traded from the Detroit Tigers to the San Francisco Giants. Smith was drafted in the third round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Tigers. He spent four seasons in the Tigers organization finishing with a 13-14 record and a 3.92 ERA in 78 games and 222.2 IP. A fresh start for Smith in the Bay Area! ”

@TannersTigers: “Mannn we traded away Dylan Smith. I had faith in him panning out, he did well in his short time with the big league squad last year.”

@MoTownSportsPod: “This one is still a head scratcher. Dylan Smith was great when he got the opportunity last year. I don’t understand why he didn’t get more of a shot.”

Giants Right Now

The Giants are coming off a season where they missed the MLB playoffs (despite having a talented roster).

Following their series with the Padres, the Giants will head back to San Francisco to host the New York Mets on April 2.

Smith could turn out to be a solid addition for the organization based on his sample size with the Tigers last year.
