On March 25, Bakersfield police were called to an apartment complex on College Avenue for a report of an assault. Officers said they found Rojo, 30, suffering from stab wounds. She was taken to Kern Medical, where she later died.

Her brother, Noe Castro, remembered Rojo as a devoted family member and mother. “I just want everyone to know that she was an absolutely amazing person,” Castro said. “She was like a second mom to me.”

Castro said Rojo played a central role in keeping the family close. “I feel like she was the… like, the glue that kept us all together,” he said.

Castro said the family has started a GoFundMe intended to help support Rojo’s children, including extracurricular activities and other necessities for her 4- and 6-year-old daughters. “Yolanda always made sure that my nieces, whatever they wanted to do, she made sure that she put in enough work by herself you know to fund whatever it was,” Castro said.

Earlier this year, one of the girls was able to perform at an L.A. Rams versus Cardinals game, something Castro said would not have been possible without Rojo. “Thats why we want this trust fund to help them still be able to do the things that they already did because of Yolanda,” he said.

He added that continuing those activities is one way the family hopes to keep Rojo’s memory alive.
