San Diego police on Wednesday identified a 51-year-old son believed to have fatally shot his 83-year-old mother before turning the gun on himself in a murder-suicide last week at the North Park home they shared.

Galen Sherwood is suspected of shooting his mother Virginia Sherwood on San Marcos Avenue near Kalmia Street on March 23, said police Acting Lt. Christopher Leahy.

Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots coming from the home, and said a man with a gunshot wound to his head was on the porch of the house, Leahy said.

Officers found Galen Sherwood on the porch and began performing life-saving measures, investigators said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police then found Virginia Sherwood inside the home with a gunshot to her upper torso, Leahy said. She died before she could be taken to a hospital.

A firearm was recovered at the scene and will be tested by the department’s crime lab.

Further details about the shooting were not available Wednesday.
