A crew suspected of armed stick-ups throughout Alameda County fired shots at police officers in West Oakland before getting away on Wednesday morning, authorities said.
No one was injured and Oakland police did not return fire, according to interim police Chief James Beere. The suspects had not been captured by early Wednesday evening.
The group allegedly committed a robbery in East Oakland on Wednesday morning, then headed to West Oakland, police said.
Officers tried to stop the suspects’ car, but they took off, beginning a pursuit, Beere said.
In the area of 18th and Market streets, one of the suspects inside the car fired shots at the officers. The driver kept going and out of concern for “people coming to work and the rest of the community,” police called off their chase, Beere said.
“We’re very confident, though, that we’ll be able to follow up on that,” Beere said, before addressing the suspects directly. “It’s probably a good idea that you turn yourself in and stop what you’re doing, because we are going to get you.”
Beere said the department had developed “several strong leads” in collaboration with federal investigators and expected to make arrests in the coming days. The suspects are also suspected of recent burglaries, he said.
Authorities did not provide a description of the vehicle the suspects were traveling in, and the department did not immediately return a request for comment about the number of suspects they sought.
