High levels of rotavirus in some Bay Area cities – NBC Bay Area

A potentially deadly virus is spreading in parts of the Bay Area.

Wastewater data shows rates of rotavirus are high in San Jose, Fremont, Redwood City and Marin County.

Levels are more moderate in Sunnyvale, San Francisco and Novato.

The virus causes symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, fever and stomach pain.

Infants and young children are more likely to develop severe symptoms. The virus spreads in places such as hospitals and child care centers.

While it is highly contagious, there is a vaccine, which the CDC says about 75% of children receive.
